Gary Stewart is a deputy director in Cornell's Office of Government and Community Relations. Prior to coming to Cornell in 2002, Stewart was a lifelong newspaperman. serving as Ithaca Journal Opinion Page Editor for a decade, and prior to that, as the first managing editor of The Moscow Times, shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Gary and former Soup of Hope speaker Cal Walker have been instrumental in creating and preserving a partnership between downtown Ithaca's Calvary Baptist Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. This special relationship is now 10 years old, and has empowered people from all walks of life to work, play, strategize and worship together, while creating focused dialogues on race, class, spirituality and other community topics. The Calvary-St. Paul's Connection includes a signature community concert, "Lift Every Voice", which raises money and awareness for the Village of Ithaca. Gary is also a long-term lay preacher in the United Methodist Church.
Additionally, he writes twice-monthly columns for The Ithaca Journal, co-produces a weekly radio show on WHCU, "All Things Equal", which deals with issues tied to race, class and equity, and hosts a monthly cable TV show, "East Hill Notes", which can be viewed on CornellCast as well. He serves on the board of directors for Hospicare, Better Housing for Tompkins County, Human Services Coalition, Leadership Tompkins, Environmental Management Council and the Strategic Tourism Planning Board. On campus, he is a member of Cornell's Employee Assembly, co-chairs the Collegetown Neighborhood Council, and serves on the Cornell United Way Cabinet.
Gary is a native of Canandaigua, and lives in Ithaca with his wife Mary Ellen and 11-year-old son Ben.
